An example of Flash Memory Based is the Apple iPod Touch, Apple iPod Nano or Creative Labs Zen PMP. A drawback of the Flash Memory Based is that it is more expensive than the Hard Drive Based Players even if the storage capacity is less.

CHOOSING A MP3 PLAYER OR PMP

Now that you're armed with the basic information you have to determine which type is best for you. Your personal needs and budget will help you to narrow down your choice.

Decide the type. - Hard Drive vs Flash Memory. When deciding the type keep in mind what you're using it for. For example, if you're going to use it while jogging, then the hard drive based player will not be a good choice because of the size, weight and high chance it will malfunction if it's dropped.

Decide the storage capacity. - When deciding the storage capacity also keep in mind whether you also want to play video and audio (PMP) or just audio. They also come in various storage capacities which can vary by brand. The iRiver brands features a 20 GB capacity. The Archos has a PMP that has 60 GB capacity. Whether you're looking for 1 GB to 160 GB there is a brand and model to suit your needs.

Decide the features. - Determining features is based on personal preference. Some MP3 Players/PMP have several features that may include voice recorders, calendar syncing, FM radio, wireless capability, photo storage or recording TV like a DVR player. For these particular features you may want to consider the Archos brand of PMPs. Another popular feature is color. If you're into pink then you can get a pink mp3 player. Your options are endless it just depends on your personal needs and how much you're willing to spend.

Decide how much you're willing to spend. - The more features you desire the more you'll spend on a MP3 Player. The Microsoft Zune media player unexpectedly jumped into the portable Mp3 player market and is now gaining some loyalists. This is because the Zune has a bigger 3.2 inch display and a touch-sensitive pad with two buttons button for navigation. It isn't the thinnest device with a 0.5 inch thickness, but it is still cool to carry around with and comes with a wide range of trendy colors.

Regarding the battery life, it isn't very amazing and usually lasts after 10 or 11 hours of playtime. Fortunately, you can charge the Zune media player via USB if you are near a PC or have a laptop with you. Doing this will only take 3 hours. To extend the life of the battery by a little bit, you can adjust the brightness levels. The best thing about this is that even the low brightness settings offer a good display even in total darkness.

Song management is pretty good thanks to the click-wheel that allows quick access to the song you want. The "back" button seems a bit out of place, but the interface can easily be embraced after you get the hang of it. The Zune media player also organizes your music based on the tags making it pretty easy even if you load gigabytes worth of music.

The Zune media player comes with a few nifty personalization options both outside and inside the player. On the inside, you can set a custom wallpaper in a similar fashion to cell phones. This also doubles as the album art for songs that do not have one set. On the outside, there are plenty of Zune colors to choose from and special designs can be engraved on the back as well.

Unlike most mp3 players, the Zune has a WiFi option that allows wireless transfer from computers or between Zunes to share songs. The Zune software also comes out a bit buggy and some upgrades pose some problems among some users as well. Overall the Zune media player is a great device that can store a lot and easily play the songs you are looking for.

It's amazing to see so many people using Apple iPhones and other touchscreen mobile phones that do everything. But what if you don't need a device that's loaded with the works? If you like to keep business and pleasure separate, Microsoft has released the Zune Video MP3 Player (or Zune HD to keep it short). Coming in as a premium device next to their cheaper counterparts, the Zune HD comes with either 16 or 32 Gigs or space, an OLED touchscreen, HD radio, and WiFi with web browsing. This also has 720p playback through the HDMI output.

Is this an Apple iPod Touch killer? With a 3.3 in OLED screen, videos and movies come in vibrant and sharp with the added help of the built-in Tegra processor. It doesn't have multi-touch, but navigating is a breeze and surprisingly solid. While the videos don't show up in HD on the device, the HDMI output lets you operate the Zune HD through your TV in 720p resolution.

You can also shop the Zune marketplace from the Zune HD and surf the web with its built-in browser. (But the iPods are better for this.) Viewing web pages takes some getting use to, but is fairly quick depending on the connection. Zune's marketplace lacks in the app department compared to the app store that Apple offers its users. HD radio and sound quality are the advantages that the Zune Video MP3 Player has over all similar devices on the market. Music comes in rich and the bass is good. HD radio comes in with CD quality sound and you can also tag songs if you wish to buy it later. There's a quick play feature that takes all the songs in your collection and creates a playlist that matches the genre or mood you want. If you also own an Xbox 360, you can sync the Zune HD with the console and play or even purchase music and movies this fall. It is a disadvantage that you'll have to wait for this, but Microsoft is putting in the final touches before they do.

The included software is no different from others available. You can sync libraries easily with right click or drag-and drop albums and videos right onto the device. If you have a bunch of movies in AVI, you may want to get a converter (the standard formats are WMV and MP4). All MP3s can work with the program, regardless of DRM. If you like buying a CD every month, Zune Pass lets you have unlimited downloads plus 10 to keep each month for $15/ month. You can only burn tracks that you buy with points or the 10 freebies you get, but this is highway robbery if you choose to keep it all on the Zune HD or PC! Movies are also available, for rent or to own, and TV shows either in standard or HD. The Zune Video MP3 Player costs $220 for 16 Gigs and $290 for 32. Just remember this is not necessarily for web browsing or game playing though, the iPods are better for these things.
